Tonnage and Machine Selection from an STL File

Upload your 3D part file (STL): volume, weight and projected area are calculated in your browser and a suitable injection molding machine is suggested. The file never leaves your computer. Free and no sign-up required; you can switch to the other 14 tools from the tabs above.

Your file is processed entirely in your browser — it is never uploaded to a server and never shared with us. You can use it safely for confidential part geometries.
Upload your STL file: volume, weight and projected area are calculated automatically, and the tonnage and suitable DKM models are listed. If you have a STEP file, use "Save As -> STL" in your CAD program — it is a single step and the geometry is more than accurate enough for the calculation.

These calculations produce guide values; the final selection has to be based on the part geometry, the mold design and the data from the material manufacturer. For an assessment specific to your application, contact our technical support team.

How is this calculated?

An STL file describes the surface of the part with triangles. From a closed surface the volume is calculated exactly; volume x density gives the weight, and the silhouette projection perpendicular to the mold opening direction gives the area that the clamping force calculation is built on. Unlike a photograph, nothing is estimated from a 3D file — the dimensions are read from the geometry itself.

The file is processed entirely in your browser; because it is never uploaded to a server, confidential part geometries can be analyzed safely. Wall thickness is not extracted automatically — enter the thickest wall by hand for the cooling calculation.

The method, the formula and the limits of each tool are explained directly underneath it, and the explanation changes with the tab you select. The results are engineering guide values; for an assessment specific to your application when choosing the final machine and equipment, contact our technical team.
