A metal particle that gets into the material does damage in three places. First it scores the screw and barrel — this wear is irreversible and the shot weight starts to fluctuate. Then it reaches the mold; damage in the gate area turns into maintenance costs. Finally it shows up in the part as a black speck or surface defect.

What decides is how the material moves: free-fall separators are used for bulk granulate falling by gravity, pressure line separators for liquid pumped under pressure, and conveyor belt separators for material carried on a belt.
The second criterion is magnet strength: for fine iron dust neodymium, for coarse pieces ferrite may be sufficient.
Magnetic separators only hold ferromagnetic materials — iron, steel, cast iron. Aluminum, brass and most stainless steels are not magnetic. Because granulator blades and screen wire are usually stainless, an all-metal separator is required in addition to the magnetic separator if this risk exists.
