Welding Magnets

It positions metal parts by holding them at fixed angles (45°, 90°, 135°) during welding; it leaves both of the worker's hands free. A practical and safe solution in steel structure assembly.

Leaving both hands free

Holding the parts at the correct angle during welding is the most laborious part of the job. A vise does not suit every geometry, and before tacking the part must first stand still. The welding magnet removes this step: it holds the parts at the required angle itself, and the welder can devote both hands to the torch and the wire.

Why a fixed angle matters

45°, 90° and 135° are the angles used most often in steel structures. Because the body of the magnet imposes these angles mechanically, the step of measuring and checking squareness becomes shorter. Especially in repeat part production, angle consistency markedly reduces the work of straightening and correcting afterwards.

Notes on use

• No welding slag or swarf must remain between the magnet surface and the part; even a thin layer reduces the holding force
• If the welding current passes very close to the magnet, the field can be disturbed; it is good practice to place the ground connection away from the magnet
• Permanent magnet types hold continuously; on/off models, on the other hand, can be switched off with a lever and so make it easier to release the part
• A magnet exposed to high temperature for a long time loses strength permanently; avoid positioning it too close to the weld zone

Other holding solutions

In precast concrete production concrete formwork magnets are used to fix the formwork, and in plastic injection molding magnetic plate systems are used to clamp the mold to the machine.
