Mold Earthing Cable

The Mold Earthing Cable is a safety solution for molds standing in an electrically insulated condition.

When molds are taken off the production line for repair or testing, they are usually placed on wooden beams. In this situation the mold loses its earth connection; while heaters and cables are still fitted to it, an electrical risk arises.

The earthing cable restores the protective conductor connection of the mold. It should be used on all molds whose earthing is missing or inadequate.

Why a standing mold carries a risk

A mold taken out of production can remain in an insulated condition because of the conductive components inside it, even if its electrical connection has been removed. During repair, testing or storage, an electrical risk arises for anyone who touches this mold. In addition, static charge building up on the mold can cause problems for sensitive measuring and electronic components.

The solution is simple but gets skipped

The earthing cable connects the mold to a safe reference point. Applying it takes a few seconds; on the other hand it is easy to skip, because the assumption that "the mold is already disconnected, there is no electricity" is widespread.

When it should be used

• When the mold is taken out of production and put into maintenance
• During test and measuring operations
• On molds waiting in the store, especially if they are near areas where welding or grinding is done
• While the mold is being transported and lifted

It should be part of the maintenance routine

Unless this step is added in writing to the mold maintenance procedure, it lapses in practice. It should be one of the first items on the list of things to do when a mold is removed.
