It consists of a grid of magnetic rods in several rows; as the material flows by gravity, ferrous particles are held on the rods. It is cleaned easily by pulling the drawer out. The staggered (double-row) design catches escaping particles in the second row.
It is the most widely used of the free-fall separators, and the reason is ease of cleaning. Because the magnet rods are gathered inside a drawer, cleaning is done by pulling the drawer out, without dismantling the line. With dusty and dirty raw material that needs frequent cleaning, this directly reduces the daily workload.
A single row of rods can miss a particle passing through the middle of the flow. In the double-row (staggered) design the second row is offset so that it sits exactly opposite the gaps of the first row; in this way no path is left along which material could fall without passing through the magnetic field at all. The difference in capture rate is especially marked with fine iron dust.
If the flow is in a pressurized line, a pressure line separator is needed; if it is on a belt, a conveyor belt separator.
