TEMP 140 °C Series — Pressurized Water Mold Temperature Control Unit

A pressurized water series working up to 140 °C. To be able to use the advantages of water above 100 °C as well, the circuit is kept under pressure. The series also includes 150 °C versions.

The relationship between pressure and boiling point

Water boils at 100 °C at atmospheric pressure; as the pressure rises, the boiling point rises too. Pressurized systems make use of this physics and, by keeping the water in the liquid state, make working in the 140 °C band possible. Because there is no boiling, no vapor bubbles form in the circuit and the heat transfer is not disrupted.

Why water rather than oil

An oil-based unit can also work at the same temperature. But the heat transfer coefficient of water is noticeably higher than that of oil: the mold responds faster to a change in temperature and a lower flow rate is enough to carry the same heat. Water systems are also more economical and cause no cleaning problem in case of a leak.

The practical rule is this: if you can manage up to 160 °C, prefer water. Oil is only needed at temperatures water cannot reach safely.

Which materials this band suits

140 °C is the band of engineering plastics requiring high crystallinity and of some glass-fiber filled grades. In these materials the mold temperature determines not only the surface quality but also the degree of crystallinity, and therefore the mechanical properties. Working below the target temperature directly lowers the strength of the part.

Maintenance and safety on a pressurized circuit

Pressurized systems are more demanding than open systems in terms of sealing. Items for periodic checking: the operation of the safety valve, the accuracy of the pressure gauge, the condition of the hose and fitting connections, and the hardness of the circuit water.

Scale is more critical here; at a high temperature deposition accelerates and lowers the heat transfer. Water treatment is an investment that directly extends the life of the unit.

Brand and technology

The shared features of Rummel temperature control units — self-optimizing PID control, a 7 inch touch screen, communication with the injection molding machine over OPC-UA / Profinet / Modbus, and the multi-circuit distributor option — are explained in detail on the mold temperature control unit selection page.

For a lower temperature the 90 °C series, and for the upper limit the 160 °C series, are considered.
