Why metal is such an important problem

A metal particle mixed into the raw material in plastics processing causes damage in three separate places. First it scratches the screw and the barrel; once wear has started there is no way back and the shot weight begins to fluctuate. Then it reaches the mold; the damage it leaves at the gate area or on the cavity surface turns into mold maintenance cost. Finally it appears on the part as a black speck or a surface defect and produces scrap.

Which separator should I choose?

What is decisive is how the material moves:

The magnet strength is determined next: high gradient neodymium for fine iron dust and stainless steel chips, ferrite is enough for coarse iron pieces. The third criterion is the cleaning method — Easy-Clean designs make it possible to wipe off accumulated metal without touching the magnet and shorten the cleaning downtime.

Does a magnetic separator catch every metal?

No. Magnetic separators only catch ferromagnetic materials (iron, steel, cast iron). Aluminum, brass and most stainless steels are not magnetic; an all-metal separator (a system with a metal detector) is required for those. If there is a risk of stainless steel chips on your line, the two systems may need to be used together.
