Dry Air Dryer

Ferlin EasyDry — EasyDry FED 15/30. Air flow 15 m³/h. Hopper 30 L. Excluding frame.12 models
Ferlin Plastics Automation — Netherlands

Ferlin EasyDry honeycomb rotor dehumidifier — it removes the moisture from plastic granulate and so secures quality and dimensional stability in injection molding and extrusion processes. Touch screen control panel, a low and stable dew point, the RCE anti-stress function and an energy saving mode.

  • ✓ Honeycomb (alveolar) rotor technology — dehumidifying, regeneration and cooling at the same time
  • ✓ A low and stable dew point over time
  • ✓ Control panel with a graphic touch screen (HMI)
  • ✓ Automatic temperature and air flow setting according to the material recipe
  • ✓ Energy efficiency with the RCE (anti-stress) function

Ferlin EasyDry Dry Air Plastic Dryer

The Ferlin EasyDry FED series are compact machine-side dry air (desiccant) dryers. With honeycomb rotor technology they lower the dew point of the air to levels reaching –40 °C and remove both the surface and the internal moisture of plastic granulate.

The difference from a hot air dryer

Hot air dryers remove only the surface moisture and fall short on hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing) plastics. Dry air dryers, thanks to a low dew point, draw the moisture out from inside the granulate — the precondition of quality and dimensionally stable production.

Which raw materials should be dried with dry air?

  • Hygroscopic (dry air mandatory): Nylon (PA6/PA66), polycarbonate (PC), ABS, PET, PBT, PMMA (acrylic), TPU, PLA, ASA
  • Non-hygroscopic (surface moisture): PP, PE (HDPE/LDPE), PS — process stability and surface quality improve with these materials as well

Insufficient drying leads to defects such as bubbles, silver streaks, brittleness and dimensional deviation.

EasyDry is offered in a hopper volume range of 30–1500 L, with a touch HMI, the RCE anti-stress function, energy saving modes and air flow rate options of 15–350 m³/h.

EasyDry is the dry air solution for hygroscopic raw materials. For materials that do not absorb moisture, such as PE and PP, a more economical type is enough; for a comparison see the plastic material dryers page.

The logic of dry air drying

EasyDry removes the internal moisture of the granulate by lowering the dew point of the air to levels reaching –40 °C. Dry air draws the moisture inside the granulate to itself; temperature speeds up that transfer. Without both conditions being met together, hygroscopic material does not dry — hot but humid air does not do the job.

How the capacity is determined

There are two decisive values: the hourly consumption of the machine and the residence time of the material. The hopper has to be large enough to hold the product of these two. A machine consuming 40 kg of PA6 per hour must hold 160 kg of material in the hopper continuously for a residence time of 4 hours; since the bulk density is 0.65 kg/L, this means approximately 250 liters.

Choosing the hopper larger than necessary is also a problem: if the material stays in hot air longer than it should, degradation begins, especially in PET and TPU.

Protecting the dried material

Granulate leaving the dryer takes the moisture back within minutes in an open hopper or an uninsulated line. Using closed conveying and closed vessels is essential so that the drying is not wasted.

Which model to move to

For engineering plastics requiring a process temperature of up to 170 °C, EasyDry HT is suitable; for non-hygroscopic PE/PP/PS the more economical HotDry.
