Digicolor Drywell Dryers

Drywell is Digicolor's dry air drying system. From the on-machine dryer to a central system of 5,000 liters it is built on the same technology; because it is modular, it can be extended as the requirement grows, and when it shrinks a module can be separated and used as an auxiliary dryer.

The adsorption honeycomb principle

At the center of the system there is an adsorption honeycomb. The process air is passed through this honeycomb and its moisture is removed, then it is heated to the drying temperature specific to the material and passed through the granulate. Thanks to the continuous regeneration of the honeycomb, the dew point is adjustable and stays constant; drying thus becomes a predictable process.

The rotor technology makes the drying air dust-free. The system requires no compressed air or cooling water connection; this lowers the installation cost and the dependence on infrastructure.

What should the dew point be?

For most plastics a dew point of −20 °C is enough; below that limit the amount of moisture the air can take up increases only negligibly. We explained the relationship between dew point and residual moisture, and where the measurement should be made, in our article on moisture and dew point measurement. The standard for residual moisture measurement is DIN EN ISO 15512.

Over-drying protection

In drying, too much also causes harm. Drywell dryers have an anti-stress function and SmartMode: the material is dried as much as it needs, and granulate waiting a long time in the chamber is not over-dried. What over-drying does to the material can be seen in the drying note on the material processing data page; in transparent polyamide, above 90 °C it yellows the granulate.

Dry air or hot air?

A dry air dryer is for moisture-absorbing (hygroscopic) plastics: PA, PC, ABS, PET, PBT, PMMA. In these materials the moisture is inside the granulate, not on the surface; it can only be removed with dried air. A hot air dryer, on the other hand, is used for preheating and surface drying on materials with low moisture sensitivity. We explained the distinction in detail in our article on material drying.

You can look at the mark that undried material leaves on the part on the moisture streaks page.
